Generally colleges welcome home educated students, but it is always wise to check on the admission requirements of particular schools of interest. Don't assume. Contact admissions counselors. Some universities have one counselor designated for home educated students. Finding out valuable information early enables parents and young adults to plan well for the high school chapter of a student's life.
Finding the specific requirements for home educated students on a college site can take time. In an effort to help parents, I have created this blog with links, hoping it might save someone, somewhere, time. I will add to the list as I am able, so check back.

This is fabulous! We are still several years away from needing a list like this, but I am a planner, and this is already a question I have. I am most pleased to see the variety of institutions you have listed. Great job and thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words! You are a planner, that is wonderful. What I find interesting is the ease with which home educated students can apply. The welcome mat is definitely out for us! I add as I can.
DeleteGlad it was helpful.
Any located in Oklahoma?
ReplyDeleteSusan, I am sure they are. Just haven't had to find them. Will take a look and add as I can. You can research by going to the school's website and searching for home education admission requirements. If you find something that will help others, let me know. I am all about building community, including across the states.

DeleteWe may be navigating our way through admission to the Military Academies soon. I will hopefully have some insight to add on this. So far, I know they encourage dual-enrollment since a letter of recommendation needs to be written from the student's Math and English teachers, and from their Guidance Counselor--of which a homeschooling mom is typically "all three" of those roles.
ReplyDeleteThough I have not have a student apply, I did listen to an admissions counselor from the Air Force Academy. They want the student to contact them early, 8th and 9th grade. In addition to academics they like athletic involvement and community service. When my student applied for a highly selective school we used a recommendation from an online teacher he had as well as a teacher (who actually was a home educating mom who taught English in public school pre-homeschooling)who taught a writing class through a co-op.
