College Credit by Exams

Earning college credit by examination is becoming more and more popular as students try to cut their college expenses and the time needed to earn a post-secondary degree. Achieving predetermined scores can save time and money, however there are many other angles to consider. Student abilities and strengths differ in the same way colleges differ as to what test scores they will accept or how many credits may be transferred in.  Educating ourselves about the process of taking exams for college credit can save money, but also prevent student discouragement and frustration during the college admission process.

Here are some quick bullet points to remember as you seek to learn more about credit by exam.

• Find out what the credit by exam policies are at the colleges where the student wishes to attend.
• Understand limitations of credit by exam.
• Not all students will want or need to take these exams.
• Though most colleges accept some credits by exam, they vary as to how many  "banked" credits they will allow. 
• Look at all angles of credit by exam: student ability, student desire, cost of materials and testing.
• Think ahead. If your student wants to attend a large university where general education classes enroll hundreds of students, consider obtaining credit by exam for those courses.
• Ask questions.
